By teaching our students math in a 'real-world context' they are developing a deeper understanding of the math concepts. The best part about word problem story mats & worksheets is that students are in control. Students are handling the manipulatives to aid them in understanding and answering the word problem, and as we know students who are active in their learning have a greater engagement and better long-term comprehension.

How Does It Work:

• Information about using the mats in your class
• The story mat comes in two formats - with and without an equation box (you choose what suits your students learning needs best),
• manipulatives to cut out and use to create the 'story' (although if you have erasers or other manipulatives you want to use you can).
• 4 word problem questions (2 addition and 2 subtraction within 10)- They may include:
  • Joining – result, change and start unknown
  • Separating – result, change and start unknown
  • Part-Part-Whole – whole unknown, both addends unknown

• cut and paste worksheets for each problem

This is just a free sample of the full pack and as such the full resource is not included. The full resource also includes the questions as a PowerPoint to show the whole class the math problem, individual question strips for students' workbooks, and pages for students to show their thinking. This allows you to address the problem in a multitude of formats to suit your learners' readiness.
