What educators are saying

My students love these word problem story mats! I love that they make solving word problems more concrete and hands on for my students, especially since some have fine motor difficulties and would not be able to draw pictures!
These are very cool and engaging. I love the concept and these have been used lots to consolidate our learning. Thank you.

    Description

Are you looking for an engaging and interactive way to teach addition and subtraction word problems? If yes, then this addition and subtraction word problem story mat and worksheet bundle is what you need.

Word Problem Story Mats and Worksheets help students visualize and understand math problems while providing a concrete model of the math concept being explored, and students who are active in their learning have greater engagement and better long-term comprehension.

The addition and subtraction word problem story mat bundle includes 10 mats (in 2 formats), 120 problems, pictures to use as manipulatives, and 4 recording sheets for numbers within 10 and 20. The recording sheets allow students to expand their understanding of how to show the equation in different formats, such as drawing the problem, showing it on a number line, or showing it in a tens frame box

Themes in this pack for both story mats and worksheets include:

    • Dinosaurs – with dinosaurs to use as manipulatives to solve word problems
    • Dinosaur Cave – with dinosaurs and dinosaur eggs to use as manipulatives to solve the word problems
    • Dinosaur Fossils – with fossil rocks and bones to use as manipulatives to solve the word problems
    • Car Race – with red and blue race cars to use as manipulatives to solve the word problems
    • Car Park – with cars to park in the parking spots and use as manipulatives to solve the word problems
    • Trucks – with trucks to have on the worksite and use as manipulatives to solve the word problems
    • Castle – with princesses and princes to use as manipulatives to solve the word problems
    • Knights and Dragons – with dragons and Knights to use as manipulatives to solve the word problems
    • Gnomes – with Gnomes to use as manipulatives to solve the word problems
    • Unicorn & Fairy – with unicorns and fairies to use as manipulatives to solve the word problems

For each Word Problem Story Mat theme, there is:

    • Story mat version 1 – a picture background to move the manipulatives to show the math problem
    • Story mat version 2 - with a space to write the math equation
    • 4 addition word problems within 10
    • 4 subtraction word problems within 10
    • 2 addition word problems within 20,
    • 2 subtraction word problems within 20.
    • 1 page of pictures to use as manipulatives - although you can use anything you have in your class such as mini erasers, pompoms, beads, or linking cubes

The story mats come both with and without an equation box. You can choose whether you want your students only to show the answer with the manipulatives or to include writing the equation. I normally laminate (or glue) the equation and non-equation mats back to back so that when my students are ready we can flip the pages over. This also allows me to have some students focus on creating and understanding the word problem while others can write the numerals to show the problem and answer.

Each question and theme is repeated in a worksheet form which includes - the question, cut-and-paste manipulatives, and a space to write the equation.

For the worksheets print the addition or subtraction problem you want to focus on, provide students with glue, scissors, and optional coloring equipment, and you are set to go.

With the worksheets there are usually more manipulatives to cut and paste than needed, this helps your students focus on the numbers required and not just randomly gluing pieces on.

    The questions may include:

    • Joining – result, change, and start unknown
    • Separating – result, change, and start unknown
    • Part-Part-Whole – whole unknown, both addends unknown

To set this up for my students regardless of using the story mats or the worksheets, we look at the problem together, we read the problem and we look at the words that will help us understand what we are focusing on (e.g. what is telling us it's adding or subtracting and what numbers are we using). This helps those students for whom reading the problem would otherwise be a barrier. As students develop their skills with word problems, so will their understanding of how to organize their manipulatives to show their thinking more clearly.
