Shopping Spree Poster Project (Great for the holidays!)
Students are awarded and imaginary $1000 to go gift shopping for their friends and families! They must buy presents for at least 10 people and cannot spend over $1000. Pictures of gifts (with their prices) are cut out of actual store flyers and collected. Extra credit is awarded to those few that manage to spend exactly $1000! To make it more challenging, they must only purchase gifts with $ .01 through $.99 included in the prices. (No whole dollar gifts allowed) When they are done "shopping"

This project allows students to work with and demonstrate their knowledge of operations with rational numbers in fraction and decimal form. There are two versions of the project - A is for on-level students and B - is a modified project.

Tip & Tax: Menu Project
This menu project reinforces the application of tax and tip in a restaurant setting.
Prior to having students complete this project, I went to local restaurants and asked for take-out menus. I then let students choose which restaurant menu they would like to use to complete the project. The students are asked to choose a drink, an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert from the menu, then fill in the Menu Project worksheet accordingly.

8.NS.1 Converting Repeating Decimals to Fractions: Performance Assessment
Determine how close to proficiency your students are with Common Core standard 8.NS.1. These two problems will challenge your students to break a decimal apart into known fractions. The scoring rubric is on the assessment itself so students know exactly what you are looking for. The rubric should be introduced prior to the assessment as students are practicing the skill so they know the depth they are expected to be reaching and to challenge them to go further than simply finding an answer.

A culminating activity for students to demonstrate their computation skills regarding addition, subtraction and multiplication of decimals. It also applies the cross-curricular aspect of math "language" and design of real-life word problems. Enjoy!

Students plan their dream vacation road trip and complete all of the math involved including

Students will create an advertisement with an original store name that promotes a sale. Students will write an original price and percentage off for the "sale". Students will determine the sale price as well as the total price after tax.
