Black History Month Research and Informative Writing Project
This project is amazing for third through sixth graders! It starts with a page with websites on it for students to do research on, and ideas for an African American that they can select to do their project on.
There are examples of opening and closing sentences, and boxes organized for students to research early life, early adult/college life, and adult life. After completing a graphic organizer, there is a final copy!

My 3rd grade students start their day by writing one paragraph about a given topic in preparation for the 3rd Grade Guarantee. In the spirit of black history month I have put together relevant prompts. We use the Hamburger Method for brainstorming our paragraph first. Black History Month Writing Unit Plan Resource Guide
This unit plan was piloted in a third grade classroom during my student teaching semester. Students were able to learn about diversity and historical and contemporary figures in black history. The interdisciplinary design of the unit ties black history and writing together to allow for weaving lessons on important topics throughout the duration of the unit. The unit is centered around three children's books all with available read a-louds on YouTube.
