I designed this lesson to appeal to boys in particular, and also, to use gestalt thinking. Rather than just solve the measurement problems in a vacuum, the kids have the greater goal of helping with the military mission by finding the impassable points on the road in the map.
Kids need to follow the directions closely, to rule out where on the map is impassable by first finding the widths of each point.
