Students rotate around 9 stations. The students will measure the dimensions of various objects and calculate their volume. Students will use a ruler, metric stick, yarn or string, and a graduated cylinder. Some of the shapes include a sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism, and an irregularly-shaped object. This lab prepares the students for the Density of 4 Mystery Metals Lab.

Students will be introduced to ideas such as density, Charles's Law, Boyle's Law, and buoyancy. They will model with mathematics, using linear equations, ratios and rates. The students will apply the ideas and physical properties to scuba diving and transfer the knowledge to explain why objects float in air. Ultimately, students will become "teachers" of the subject and will work together to create a model and poster session.

Students are asked to determine the densities of different candies by measuring the mass and calculating the volume using geometry. This activity gets students to see the relationship mass and volume has to density. Students will practice carefully measuring, recording, organizing and analyzing data. Dimensional analysis of units is also employed.
