December/Christmas/Winter Journal Writing Prompt Booklet
This is a 7 page booklet that features two journal entries on each page. The first is a title page, so there are 12 writing prompts. Each page has several lines for a student response, as well as a box to draw a picture of the journal entries.
These half sheets are to be cut out and given to students one at a time. At the end of the month, just before break, I like to punch holes and bind the journals for students to keep as a momento.

WORD CHOICE: Are You Showing Not Telling
Are you frustrated with your student's lack of descriptive writing. This activity is a great introduction to the concept of showing not telling in writing. On each of the twelve pages, students have an opportunity to sketch a picture related to an emotion. At the bottom of each page, they should describe the emotion without using the actual word (e.g. my heart was racing, my jaw dropped, and etc.)

Narrative Planning Plot Chart
I created and printed this plot chart onto 11 by 17 paper for my class this year in order to help them plan their narrative stories before writing. It worked wonders!
Each step on the plot chart has clear instructions for each part of the story. (Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution)
I let my students write notes of their plans all over these and their stories have stayed right on track once they began writing!

Toss Away Worn Out Words Poster
This file is poster sized. (24 by 36") It can be printed through poster maker or printed onto several small sheets and assembled together. Once printed, you can laminate it and hang onto the wall. I have my students right our "worn out" words onto the trash can with dry erase marker. This is a great visual for students and it encourages vocabulary growth.
