WORD CHOICE: Are You Showing Not Telling
Are you frustrated with your student's lack of descriptive writing. This activity is a great introduction to the concept of showing not telling in writing. On each of the twelve pages, students have an opportunity to sketch a picture related to an emotion. At the bottom of each page, they should describe the emotion without using the actual word (e.g. my heart was racing, my jaw dropped, and etc.)

Narrative Planning Plot Chart
I created and printed this plot chart onto 11 by 17 paper for my class this year in order to help them plan their narrative stories before writing. It worked wonders!
Each step on the plot chart has clear instructions for each part of the story. (Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution)
I let my students write notes of their plans all over these and their stories have stayed right on track once they began writing!

Lightning Thief Writing Packet
A story writing packet for a unit on "The Lightning Thief," by Rick Riordan. Students will write their own half-blood story with 16 pages of guidance on creating characters, locations, and event sequences. They will fill in a story map and edit their final work.
This packet was created for my 6th grade English students, but could be used with any 5-8 class. Feel free to edit as you like!

Create A Nail Polish Line - Romeo and Juliet
A line of nail polishes representing The Hunger Games was released earlier this month. It struck me that it might be fun for the students to create a nail polish line based on another set of star-crossed lovers: Romeo and Juliet. This activity would not only allow students to be creative, but to show their understanding of the events and characters in the story.

While searching Pinterest, I saw a few photos of Peeta and popular songs that had been rewritten about the "bread incident." I thought the students would enjoy creating their own parodies of popular work, so I created a worksheet to do just that! Enjoy!

YouTube Scavenger Hunt 2
This is a writing assignment that has become very popular with my students! Our kids are the YouTube generation. They would rather be on YouTube than anything else. I developed this assignment as a means of using what they like to improve on their writing skills. Hope it is as successful with your students as it has been with mine!!!
