This tool is meant to operate as a POPULATED (10 questions) template for thinking regarding self questioning and rationale for EACH step of solving/simplifying any equation/expression.This tool is best used as an exemplar to extend work with students and releasing them to do self directed practice. A great Gradual Release tool which can also serve to build student capacity for productive discourse, self direction, reflection, and rationale critique and defense... all of which helps to develop a

Students will be introduced to the idea that order matters by applying a percentage discount and a dollar discount in different orders. They will then solve two and three step equations in different orders and determine through substitution which is the correct order. They should conclude that the order to cancel operations is PEMDAS backwards.

Using Deductive Reasoning to Simplify an Algebraic Expression Worksheet

Students will use this worksheet to show their mathematical steps on one side of the paper and write their steps out in words on the other. This activity will force students to explain their mathematical thinking while simplifying each step of the expression. I recommend they use this worksheet along with their notes when first learning how to simplify expressions of this type.

On the first day of school this year I showed my students a web of 8 mathematical things about myself. Instead of just introducing myself, they had to solve the math problems to figure out things about myself. Afterwards, they then created their own math webs showcasing Eight Math Things about themselves. It was an awesome first day activity and great review of PEMDAS! :) This could be adapted for all subjects - the document is blank but the web with 8 spaces is all you really need! Fill it
