Main Idea and Details Graphic Organizer Free!
I use this graphic organizer in whole group and small group settings to help my students determine the topic of a book/article, main idea, and three supporting details. My students understand the main idea as the cloud and the supporting details as the raindrops.
This graphic organizer has helped my students grasp the concept, as the definitions are present on the page. It could also be used for planning a writing piece.

Main Idea and Key Details graphic organizer
This is a simple graphic organizer for reading of literature or informational text. It is aligned to common core standards for both Kindergarten and Grade 1.
This graphic organizer can be used to give the students a brief definition of both the main idea and details ("clues"). Each of two sections outlines first the Main Idea, and then 3 Key Details.
A detective and clues theme makes the fact finding more fun. It also features a name, book/story, and page header for easy organization.

Drawing to Retell- FREE Writing and Reading Comprehension Strategy
This is one of my all-time favorite quick writing strategies. It can be used with any topic and can serve as a pre or post assessment. Just select a topic and grab a nonfiction text from your school library. Ask your students to draw a picture of the topic before you read the text, then read the text and have them draw a second picture.
