A fun and effective way to improve phonemic awareness! Picture sound counting boxes can be used to help students who have difficulty with phonemic awareness. This research-based technique has been proven to help children hear the individual sounds in words. This particular Smart notebook activity focuses on the beginning blends in words. I used this in teaching CC.1.RL.6 for my first graders.

This is a great way to prepare students for test taking. It teaches them to stop frequently and then draw a picture of what they just read.
