Combining Like Terms Headlines in Black History Worksheet
This worksheet gives students the opportunity to simplify 20 expressios by combining like terms while making connections to black history. Students will encounter rigorous problems requiring distribution and involving fractional coefficients, and can use the puzzle key to check their work and collect a new letter after each problem. After collecting the letters, students use use them to fill in headlines from a year in American history and then deploy their history knowledge (or research skills!

Banneker's Ticktock Clock - Math in Black History Month
Students watch a short video about Benjamin Banneker's life and accomplishments, then collaborate to produce a PowerPoint slideshow. They'll solve equations using substitution to decode their own Tick-tock Clock, after watching a read-aloud of the book. Their creative side will run wild with an open slide for their own showcase of Mr. Banneker's life. My students were amazed at all he accomplished and excited to learn more to contribute to our celebration of Black History Month.
