St.Patrick's Day Math Activity

Teachers fill up ziplock bags of Lucky Charm cereal and distribute bags to small groups of students. Students count the total number of oats and different types of marshmallows. This is a 3 page flipchart teaching students to use dimes and pennies. I use this in a whole group teaching lesson where first graders use real dimes and pennies to show how much it would cost to buy a certain (Christmas themed) item. The 3rd page allows for the purchase of 2 items at a Bake Sale. Students show each amount of money using dimes and pennies and then combine the coins to obtain a total amount. This flipchart was very effective in teaching this skill.
