Introduction to black history month
This flipchart is one I use to introduce the concept/idea of black history month to my students. It begins with a song about Martin Luther King, then has picture examples of the words past and present to help my kids understand what we mean when we say the "past". Then there are pages of examples of black athletes, musicians, actors, etc. At the end there is a video "black history alphabet" I hope this simplified way of introducing black history helps your class as much as it helped mine.

Flipchart with images to help students understand and discuss changes over time. You can also change the order of the slides and have students drag them to put them in the correct order. Images can also be used as writing prompts. There is an additional slide with images of Past and Present that is to facilitate discussions of civil rights and segregation.

African Heritage-MArtin Luther King Flipchart
I created this 8 page ActivInspire Flip chart to teach my special needs kinder class about important people who have made a difference. Focusing on Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and Ruby Bridges, students will have the opportunity to learn about each person and how they fought to make a difference. The goal is for students to be able to label each person with the correct name by matching and to colour using appropriate skin tones.

Use this flipchart with small groups or individual students to help them decipher the differences between nice words and mean words. Use each question as a springboard for discussion: How would you feel if someone said this to you? Would saying this make another person feel good? When are some times you could use these words?
