Finding Area of a Rectangle Using Tiling and Multiplication

Created by

This is a worksheet that can be treated as a BCR to see if students can explain how to find the area of a rectangle in two different ways- both by tiling and by using the formula (length times width). I used this to assess which students had a solid understanding of what area was and how to calculate the area of a rectangle.

We have been discussing the concept of patterns, the different types of patterns and attributes we can use to make patterns. This activity uses tangram blocks with the hexagon acting as the head. Students will choose a pattern of blocks, trace them and then colour them using a pattern. Students will then realize that they are making a pattern using two attributes. This worksheet reinforces 2D shapes and patterning. When students have completed the worksheet, they are to write the pattern rule

This worksheet is used to create 3D shapes. The best way that I found to create the shapes to really grasp the feeling of being a solid and have faces and vertices was to use Playdoh, however you can also use toothpicks and marshmallows and select only 3D shapes that have definite faces and vertices. The 2D shape worksheet is in my store also, check it out!

This is a diagram of which shapes fall into which categories based on the properties of that shape. For example, a square is a special kind of 2-D, quadrilateral, trapezoid, parallelogram, rectangle and rhombus, so it is at the end of that trail of categories. The chart is meant to eliminate confusion about which shapes fall into which categories. I found a lot of students had a hard time grasping "wait, a rectangle is a type of parallelogram? and a square is a type of rectangle?", so I felt t

*editable* These squares are designed to help students create and manipulate figures while exploring area and perimeter. Students can move the squares to learn how the concepts are related. (ex: using 12 squares, find the smallest and largest possible perimeters) I quickly created this resource to send home to my 3rd graders during the COVID19 school shut down, so it's not beautiful, but I hope it can help someone! When I teach this 'in person' I do a similar activity using the tile lines on ou

Copy each sheet on different color pages and have the students match the correct description, name, and shape. I had them put them on a poster with quadrangles as the Title and Parallelograms and Not Parallelograms as the headings for the different shapes. I used this to support Everyday Math unit 5 for second grade.
