This is a calendar that can be adjusted for your use. It includes a school year's worth of writing prompts for Sept-May. Students could have this stapled/glued inside their writing journals to offer some inspiration...or this could take the place of morning work each day. The possibilities are endless! Calendar dates could be removed, if you like a more flexible approach.

December/Christmas/Winter Journal Writing Prompt Booklet
This is a 7 page booklet that features two journal entries on each page. The first is a title page, so there are 12 writing prompts. Each page has several lines for a student response, as well as a box to draw a picture of the journal entries.
These half sheets are to be cut out and given to students one at a time. At the end of the month, just before break, I like to punch holes and bind the journals for students to keep as a momento.
This is for levels 2-4, or for special education students

Print this on regular computer paper, then students will fold it in half (hamburger style) and then fold it in have again. They can color the front and decorate the inside cover. My favorite part is where they can write an acrostic poem for their mom.

This fun activity includes a journal where students write in first person narrative format as a caterpillar follows its life cycle into a butterfly. It also includes a rubric and writing examples so students know what their writing should look like. I have also included my Life Cycle of a Butterfly handout to enrich the activity.

WORD CHOICE: Are You Showing Not Telling
Are you frustrated with your student's lack of descriptive writing. This activity is a great introduction to the concept of showing not telling in writing. On each of the twelve pages, students have an opportunity to sketch a picture related to an emotion. At the bottom of each page, they should describe the emotion without using the actual word (e.g. my heart was racing, my jaw dropped, and etc.)

Personification Worksheets
Three (3) separate personification worksheets scaffolded to meet students at their specific ability. The first page consists of multiple choice questions, while the second has students underline example of personification, and the last asks students to explain what sentences using personification means. The setting page shows the when and where aspect which helps children undertand what a setting can be. The details page help them to understand that parts of a story or book can tell us the details or rather the beginning, middle or end.

End of School Year Memory Book
This is an end of the school year memory book designed for elementary age children. The book has 14 pages for students to complete. There are places for students to write about their teachers, friends, favorite things, favorite (and not so favorite) memories, and 2 pages for autographs. I have my students cut the pages out and then we glue them on black construction paper, punch holes in the sides, and tie the pages together with ribbon. It makes a great keepsake for students to take home.

Toss Away Worn Out Words Poster
This file is poster sized. (24 by 36") It can be printed through poster maker or printed onto several small sheets and assembled together. Once printed, you can laminate it and hang onto the wall. I have my students right our "worn out" words onto the trash can with dry erase marker. This is a great visual for students and it encourages vocabulary growth.
