Intro to Branches of Government (Smart Notebook)
A Smart Notebook presentation that I made for my 3rd grade class. It walks through the 3 branches of government with the kids. It also has opportunities to click on attached links to visit various government sites. I also tried to include some matching games for definitions, pictures of important government buildings, charts showing how government power "flows", and some fill in the blanks. Power Grab Game: Separation of Powers
This activity reinforces and teaching the powers of the three branches of government. Students are broken up into teams and exposed to various situations where one branch steals the power of a another branch. Students need to use the US Constitution to prove that this is a power grab in order to earn a point. Simulation and answers are included in the SMART notebook.

This social studies lesson teaches students about the branches of government. It includes 8 slides, an essential question, graphic organizer, summarizing activity, and internet links. This lesson correlates with the 3rd grade Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) for social studies.

I created 'Thinking Time' last year and now all the classes in my school are using it. There are over 100 slides. This is a brilliant tool to have in the class room. It can be used as an exciting early morning work, a time filler on any given day or as a way of really getting the kids into a thinking state of mind.
