In this project, students will use the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate the side lengths of successive triangles. They will also use right triangle Trigonometry (Soh Cah Toa) to calculate the measure of interior angles. This project gives them a chance to create using Math, and to decorate their spiral in whatever way they choose. I often use this project before exams, allowing them to compete for bonus points. The spirals are easy to grade, and fun for the kids.

Circuit Training - Domain and Range (precalculus level)

Engage your students with this 20-question circuit on domain and range! Once you and your students try a circuit, you will be hooked! This circuit involves piecewise, composite, rational, quadratic, square root, cube root, trig, exponential and log functions. It seems simple (in each case students are given a function and then asked for the domain OR the range). But, all of the answers are very similar AND in interval notation so the students really have to understand the behavior(s) of vari

This 28-question circuit was written by honors precalculus teacher, Jennifer McManus and it is challenging! Rigorous! I love it! I haven't even finished it yet because I keep messing up -- so be careful. It is so wonderful that she wants to share it with everyone for free! Work this one BEFORE your students so you know what they need to know before they start. Remember, the answers are imbedded in the circuit (it is how students move from one question to the next), so no answer key is incl

Sunrise / Sunset -- Trigonometry Project

This project needs to be assigned / completed before you teach them how to graph the sine and cosine functions. It can be used for everyone, even middle school students (though they wouldn’t be doing it for the sine / cosine aspect). Maybe I’m “old-school”, but I like to have my students do the first part of this project without any access to the Internet. The second part of the project requires them to research, so I would allow them to do that online. This project is free and will alway

Students will then identify the amplitude and period of other sine and cosine functions, although they will not be required to graph. Students can work as a group or by themselves. This is best used as a resource after students have learned how to find amplitude and period, and can also recognize the difference between sine and cosine graphs. NOTE: There are not vertical or horizo

Investigation - Sides of a Triangle/Triangle Inequality Theorem (7.G.2)

Try asking your class: "What do I need to make a triangle?" They'll probably say "three sides!" "Will any three sides make a triangle then?" They'll probably say "of course!" Well, this investigation gives them a chance to play around with this idea. They will quickly realize that sometimes just putting three line segments together doesn't make a triangle. It depends on the lengths of those segments. Common Core Math 7 has that sneaky little standard that hints at the Triangle Inequality Theor
