The Shortcut Song (Donald Crews)
This is a song based on Donald Crews' Shortcut. It follows the sequence of the story line and builds suspense similar to the story. Other teachers have used this for multiple purposes in the reading and writing workshops such as for an extension lesson, to compare and contrast, to analyze how an author (or songwriter) builds suspense, for teaching sequence, for character analysis, and more. Teaching children to be grateful for the world around them requires them to notice it, so this song can be used for developing observational skills. This is an echo song, and I have listed (some of) the elements of nature that I am thankful for. Use the structure of the rhymes to rewrite the song with the students' contributions.

We often think that only super-heroes can be heroes, but being a hero takes lots of different forms. Some heroes are big and flashy and make it into the TV news, but sometimes being a hero is as simple as smiling kindly at someone on the street who might be looking sad. Use this as a discussion starter for what are the different characteristics of real-life heroes, and what are ways that children can be heroes.
