Have you ever wondered why your students are so enamoured with the Walking Dead, Night of the Living Dead, WWZ, Dawn of the Dead etc.?” Well, think of this…. The genre has been around for more than 80 years; and people are fascinated with the idea of the dead returning to life (starting with Christ himself). In fact, Zombie literature is the only genre to put human beings BACK in the food chain. We have been the Alpha on this planet since the advent of the spear and fire; and every other mammal on Earth has to worry about having its face chewed off at some point – except for humans. However, the Zombie genre throws this notion out the window. Humans, ALL humans, are being hunted. This creates a matter of relatability that no other genre does, and it can reach students in no other way. You will hear students say:
“Zombie apocalypse?!?! Ha! Simple…I’d just do ABC!!!”
and someone will respond:
“No, that would never work because XYZ” Also, think about what happens during a zombie apocalypse. Technology is destroyed – students can’t twitter, text or go on facebook – a truly horrific scenario for any teenager. ;-)

This unit is made of:

Part A Contingency Plan - Students must create their own contignecy kit, escape plan, map their movements, create a story every step of the way (where they went, what they ate, how they survived, did they create a secure zone? etc) "The Walking Dead" is a great resource. They must present this via a Prezi on a step by step basis. When they present their Prezi, other students in the class can challenge their plan and receive extra points for their presentation. (eg. If a student claims to drive 1000km across a city when the roads would be clogged with vehicles and the undead, and gasoline is inshort supply - then they lose a point and the student who points this out gains a point).

- A student Prezi example is included in the zip file!

Part B - You have survived! You made it to the safe zone! the military wish to be debriefed on how you actually survived. You will write a formal business report explaining your strategy and observations to the military strategists. This report will be printed out hundreds of times and dropped from helicopters in hopes that other survivors read and follow the instructions set out.

- A student report example is included in the zip file!
- Rubrics are also included.
- A note to the teacher is included
