What educators are saying

This was an amazing activity. Not only were my students excited to see what the final picture was, but they were excited to learn more about her. Thank you for an engaging way to write biographies!

Description

Known as the "Princess of Polka Dots", this Yayoi Kusama art project will be a HUGE hit with your students—it was with mine! My students LOVE that she has such bright red hair and that she uses polka dots all over her art. I have created the poster to reflect polka dots to honor the "Princess."

Yayoi Kusama Collaboration Portrait Poster 2 options included plus bonus materials. These activities are intended to complement/supplement any lesson on Yayoi Kusama. They are great to support your social studies lessons/units and for celebrating Women's History Month or any Art History lesson you might be doing - it's the PERFECT Art Sub plan as well.

The final posters make for visually engaging displays. Hang them anywhere!

  • The library
  • The front office
  • A hallway
  • Your classroom bulletin board

These posters are the perfect way to start a unit or wrap one up. They are an engaging and entertaining way for students to work together to create a large poster of Yayoi Kusama. They make a great classroom focal point and a lasting example of collaboration for your students. There are two options so you can choose what works best for you and your students!

They also make great

  • sub plans
  • morning work
  • early finisher activities
  • centers

..and more!

Recommended for any grade or discipline as there are 2 poster options available -- coloring (for lower grades) and drawing (for older students/art students). Plus, there are a variety of bonus resources included in this product for early finishers or as extensions.

Resource Details

Poster #1: Yayoi Kusama Collaboration Poster: Coloring

** GREAT FOR ANY AGE ** This lesson is very easy. Each student is given one section of a large mosaic poster to color according to the instructions on each sheet. Once all sheets are colored and cut out, they are then assembled to reveal a large mosaic/poster/mural of Kusama. You will need crayons, colored pencils, or markers in red, orange, pink, and purple.

Poster Details:

  • There are 30 pieces.
  • Each piece fits on a regular 8.5" x 11" piece of paper.
  • The final poster is approximately 35" x 42" depending on your printer settings.
  • You will need markers, crayons, or colored pencils in red, orange, pink, and purple.

Poster #2: Yayoi Kusama Collaboration Poster: Drawing

** Ideal for middle school, high school students, and art students** This lesson is not hard but is more challenging than the coloring version in poster #1. In this lesson, each student will draw their own grid piece using a small version of their assigned gridcell as a reference. Once the pieces are drawn and cut out, you can assemble the classroom poster. This lesson engenders a lot of cooperation among students to get all of the drawings within the individual gridcells to line up well and produce a nice looking final poster of Kusama. This is all about working together!

BONUS Activities:

Group collaboration posters are a lot of fun and leave a lasting impression. However, students don’t get to walk away with anything tangible to show their families. I have created a variety of handouts that individual students can work on when they are finished with their poster piece. This is also very useful for early finishers.

The handouts are for a variety of levels, so you can find one that fits your grade level. Included are:

  • Unscramble the portrait drawing.
  • Unscramble the portrait cut and paste (with two grid variations).
  • Yayoi Kusama coloring page.
