    Description

    Never prep for a writing unit again!

    These TEN writing workshop units cover the creative genres of FANTASY, HORROR, MYSTERY, REALISTIC FICTION, SCIENCE FICTION, and TRAGEDY; the expository topics of ARGUMENT, LITERARY ANALYSIS, and RESEARCH ESSAY; and the non-fiction topic of PERSONAL ESSAY. These workshops will expertly guide you and your students through the writing process of nearly every type of essay assignment.

    Our creative writing workshops facilitate the analysis of genre writing, as well as the development and creation of original student narratives. Our expository workshops are designed to work with any piece of literature, research concept, or argumentative topic.

    The creative writing and personal essay workshops (7 in all!) include the following activities and assignments:

    • FIVE genre introduction presentation files that address the definitions and structures of each genre, the characteristics of heroes, villains, literary elements and devices prominent to each genre, and MUCH MORE
    • Presentation note-taking handouts (w/ answer keys)
    • FIVE short stories by Richard Post (written exclusively for The Language of Educational Art) and 34 accompanying response questions (w/ answer keys) designed to further your students' understanding of the structure and thematic concepts found in literary works
    • A mystery writing planning packet that includes a short mystery story (with guiding questions and answer key), notes on the elements of strong mystery writing, and a step-by-step guide to planning an original mystery story
    • A "news tragedy" analysis activity that asks students to evaluate the "tragic" qualities of an included news story and test their new understanding of literary tragedy (great for group work!)
    • FIVE drafting activities with accompanying rubrics
    • FOUR literary analysis essay assignments that build on students' thematic understanding of how genre narratives are structured (40 points - tied to four Common Core Standards)
    • Narrative map templates that assist students on selecting their own stories' settings, heroes, character arcs, villains, conflicts, and MUCH MORE (almost no writing required!)
    • Narrative outline activities that allows students to take their maps' visual guidelines and begin drafting their own narratives
    • SIX narrative writing assignment sheets that includes descriptions of famous stories tied to each genre, assignment descriptions, general narrative writing tips, self and peer writing checklists, and TWO (!) standards-based grading rubrics for each narrative (a 40-point short form rubric tied to 4 Common Core standards; a 90-point long form rubric tied to 8 Common Core Standards)
    • Peer editing activity worksheets (with teacher assessment rubric)

    • An introductory PowerPoint presentation (with note taking activity and answer key) and that explains the parts of a literary analysis essay, provides writing tips, and includes examples
    • The Basics of MLA Style PowerPoint presentation to assist with essay formatting teaching
    • A Literary Analysis Essay Ordering Game, designed to get students moving in your classroom while thinking critically about the elements of essay construction
    • An editable Essay Assignment file that allows the instructor to generate endless assignment questions for any literary work you wish to assign. The assignment file includes general literary analysis writing tips and a peer edit checklist
    • Two Common Core-aligned rubrics (Short Form rubric aligned to four Common Core standards; Long Form aligned to eight CC standards)
    • A “Crafting a Literary Analysis Thesis Statement” activity that includes a definition of a thesis, a Frequently Asked Questions section, and our foolproof 4-step process for developing a thesis statement (with examples)
    • A “Literary Analysis Essay Outline Planner,” which guides students from introduction to conclusion through the literary analysis drafting process
    • A guided peer-edit partner activity

    FROM RESEARCH ESSAY WORKSHOP:

    • A presentation that introduces all 5 project tasks to your students and assists with the brainstorming of potential projects (with example photos)

    • A research note-taking journal that requires student to assess the quality of their sources as they record information necessary for later tasks

    • A research essay assignment handout that includes essay requirements, formatting example, research essay writing tips, a peer and self-review checklist, and Common Core aligned rubric tied to eight standards

    FROM ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY WORKSHOP:

    • A "Writing Argumentative Essays" presentation (with note-taking activity and key) that introduces the modes of argument (logos, pathos, and ethos) and instructs students on the basics of argument writing
    • An essay section activity that requires teamwork and movement to identify the relevant parts of an argumentative essay
    • A topic planning worksheet to assist students as they decide on their essay topic
    • A research notes worksheet to assist students with choosing quality sources for their essay
    • An essay assignment handout that contains: essay requirements, formatting example, argumentative essay writing tips, a peer-edit checklist, and 2 rubrics that can assess students on 8 ELA Common Core Standards
    • An additional alternative peer-edit activity
    • An assessment task that allows students to evaluate argument quality through peer review
