Description

Writer's Workshop Narratives/Short Stories as Mentor Texts

In this writing workshop, students will examine the literary elements in short stories and then use these mentor texts as models to brainstorm, draft, and revise their own narratives. The literary elements included in the narrative criteria are: dialogue, blocking, character and setting description, figurative language, interior monologue, and flashback.

The three suggested short stories are "Thank You M'am" by Langston Hughes, "The Jacket" by Gary Soto, and "The Family of Little Feet," an excerpt from The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. All three center around the theme of the inability of material goods to make us happy. Other short stories could be substituted or added.
