What educators are saying

Another great resource from Susan! This resource helps supports the writing programme I have in class.
A great resource to help students learn writing basics. Students enjoy the prompts and look forward to them every morning.

Description

These writing warm-up digital slides provide effective, engaging, and *quick* practice for students to work on daily writing skills! These were created to start our writing block with syntax and grammar practice and to work on skills at the sentence level. Throughout the slides, students will practice their syntax knowledge (among other skills) to complete, produce, expand, fix, and rearrange sentences!

How do you use these in your classroom?

These slides are used in a whole group setting to allow time to "talk about writing" in the same way we use a phonics warm-up and a math warm-up before we dive into skills. They are meant to be done in a short period of time (5 minutes) and we focus heavily on oral language to produce sentences before we write them down.

In my classroom, I would use take the time to review the skill at hand (see skills included below), then we would come up with sentences orally first to ensure we can produce complete sentences. After brainstorming sentences, I would choose 1 or 2 to write on the board and showcase proper spacing, capitalization, punctuation, and more.

You could also extend this activity (in 1st and 2nd grade), by having students bring a whiteboard and marker to the rug and at the end of the warm up, students will write their own sentence and share with a partner.

What is included in this unit?

There are many skills to come, but the skills currently included are as follows:

  • Turn fragments into a sentence (30 slides)
  • Compose a narrative sentence (15 slides)
  • Compose an informative sentence (15 slides)
  • Compose an opinion sentence (15 slides)
  • Nouns - Plural and Singular (20 slides)
  • Verbs - Past, Present, and Future Tense (20 slides)
  • Adjectives (20 slides)
  • Sentence scrambles (30 slides)
  • Turn a simple sentence into a super sentence (30 slides)
  • Sentence combinations (30 slides)
  • Compose a question (15 slides)
  • ...and more!

There is also an editable slide at the end of each skill set in case your students need more practice with that skill.

Enjoy!
