Description

This is an 8 page Math Activ Studio Flipchart in which students learn to write subtraction sentences to show the difference. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 3.4 - 1st grade. The lesson begins with the "Problem of the Day" in which students are given a subtraction word problem in which they use the visual manipulatives (carrots on a plate) on the Promethean Board to solve the problem. Next the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews the vocabulary terms: subtract, difference, etc, along with the symbols: minus sign and equal sign. Next, a subtraction sentence can be modeled by the teacher using the 4 stars on the Promethean Board, then the students can be invited to do the same. A subtraction video (if your computer supports the file to play video) is embedded on the next page of the flipchart. Next, the individual, group, and classwork is displayed for students (which can be modified depending on what you would like your class to work on). The flipchart then gives a review and closure problem to summarize the lesson. Last, a journal activity is played (ants on a leaf) in which students are invited to draw the same picture, cross out the ants, and write a subtraction sentence that goes with their picture. Once students are finished, the teacher can ask a few students to show what they did on the Promethean Board journal page.
