What educators are saying

My students enjoyed this project. They gained confidence in writing and solving two-step equations from real life situations.
My students absolutely loved this assignment for our gifted math class. The real world examples provided valuable situations for them to apply the standards.

Description

This is a real life activity/project where students must make decisions about purchases now that they're "on their own." Students write and solve 2 step equations to see what the monthly payments would be for certain TVs, refrigerators, laptop computers and cars. Based on the budgeted amount, students decide which objects they can afford. One problem includes percents of numbers.

Common Core Standards:

6.EE.5 - Understand solving an equation as a process of answering a question.

6.EE.7- Solve real-world and mathematical problems by writing and solving equations.

7.EE.4- Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.

6 student pages in this activity. Answer key included.

Understand solving an equation or inequality as a process of answering a question: which values from a specified set, if any, make the equation or inequality true? Use substitution to determine whether a given number in a specified set makes an equation or inequality true.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems by writing and solving equations of the form 𝘹 + 𝘱 = 𝘲 and 𝘱𝘹 = 𝘲 for cases in which 𝘱, 𝘲 and 𝘹 are all nonnegative rational numbers.
Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
