Description

In this easy-prep narrative writing assignment, students will read and analyze an excerpt from a popular film with an issue that all students faces: the internal struggle of making the right choice. Students are challenged to recall an experience in their own lives when they were called upon to do the right thing, and then they must relate that experience to the stimulus. It would be great for back-to-school, the New Year, or even end-of-year with 8th graders or seniors.

Suggestions for teaching:

  • You could use this as a cold writing task for students.
  • Another idea is to use the assignment as a summative assessment for your class.
  • If you need a model student essay, this would be an excellent pack for students to see how to put together an essay using sources from start to finish. They could dissect the info text, prompt, and sample paper. I even like for students to make a t-chart for strengths and struggles of the sample paper.
  • Provide students with the rubric and have them score the paper against specific categories.

Included in this teaching pack:

-- fully developed prompt on making good choices

-- one complete essay with citations

-- annotations for teaching

-- a score with annotations

-- one screenplay text stimulus

--common core standards for secondary ELA

-- a graphic organizer for brainstorming

-- 100% editable
