Writing Introductions & Conclusions: Exercises for Practice
- PDF
What educators are saying
Description
Writing Introductions and conclusions for essays can be difficult. Every semester, no matter how many lessons I use to show my students what good introductions and conclusions look like, they still struggle. Exit ticket after exit ticket asks for more help with intros and conclusions. So, I made these exercises to give them more practice with this important skill. (Check to preview to get more detail!)
(This lesson is an introduction. If you want a more in-depth lesson on intros and conclusions click here).
In this resource you will find information on basic strategies that students can use to write introductions and conclusions for essays. The practice sheets follow a gradual release model:
✅ The handout shows them examples of intros and conclusions
✅ The first exercise give students a few sentences of the introductory and concluding paragraph to nudge them on their way
✅ The second exercise provides the thesis only and asks them to work more independently
I have also included some blank sheets so you or the students can personalize this for particular assignments.
