What educators are saying

We used these mentor sentences to add some spice and life to our writing in 11th grade. Students took notes on the structure of the sentences and then wrote their own using the sentence models. Eventually, they used these types of sentences in their writing pieces.
I use this lesson as part of my back to school unit. It adds some good writing elements to keep an eye on throughout the school year.

Description

In this "Write Like a Pro" lesson, you'll use the styles of current and classic authors to teach your students six simple and effective techniques that will IMMEDIATELY improve their sentence flow and writing voice.

This 28-slide presentation and 2-page student handout will introduce your students to easy-to-use and highly effective techniques to improve their effectiveness on the page. The lecture slide deck includes both online/offline Prezi files and a Google Slides version. The handout, which includes a 2-page answer key, includes both a printable PDF and Google Drive version for online learners.

Six skills are taught, including:

• Participles

• Absolutes

• Appositives

• Adjectives shifted out of order

• Vivid verbs

• Similes and Metaphors

For each topic, examples are included with before and after revisions. Each topic also includes a sample of the technique being used by a famous professional writer. From Ernest Hemingway to John Steinbeck to Stephen King (and, yes, I even threw in a Pat Benatar lyric – I mean, love is a battlefield, right?), the short, carefully crafted passages are sure to entertain and inspire your students.

After the lecture, help solidify the writing techniques in students' minds by practicing each skill as they examine and mimic a wide variety of authors' works. Finally, have your students apply the techniques to their own (and peer) writings. Instant improvement!
