What educators are saying

I'm loving using this novel study with my class as the questions require inferencing, deep thought, and discussions within the class which makes a novel study all the more engaging. Students are applying reading standards in a real-life meaningful way that doesn't even feel like reading!
This is a great resource. It goes beyond simple multiple choice questions and encourages deeper thinking!

Description

You and your students will love this print-and-go novel unit for this character-building novel! Perfect for lit circles, book clubs, and guided reading, this product includes rigorous and CCSS-aligned text dependent questions to get students thinking critically! (CCSS alignment provided for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade.)

This novel, by R.J. Palacio, challenges young readers to put themselves in August's shoes as he faces life with a facial deformity. Readers will fall in love with the novel's format - they get to read the story from multiple characters' perspectives and see the same event through multiple sets of eyes! August's story is heartwarming, occasionally hilarious, and always a great read for curious readers of many ages.

This novel study is a 73-page PDF document, with 38 pages of CCSS-aligned (grades 4-6), text-dependent, thought-provoking questions for this novel, which has been broken into 27 reading assignments. Each page of student work includes the CCSS alignment, and has a correlating answer sheet (included after the student work pages) with detailed responses and discussion ideas for reading groups. Character maps for the main characters, as well as a pre-reading journaling space, are included in the beginning of this novel study, and the quotes for each of the eight parts to this novel study are included for students to interpret according to the story. As a small scaffold for readers, many of the text-dependent questions point students to page numbers or specific passages for their responses, allowing students to practice close reading skills effectively. A detailed key is provided for teachers to make instruction a breeze!

If you enjoy this product, please rate! While I know that my students loved this novel study, feedback from others is ALWAYS greatly appreciated! Happy reading!
