I like to begin this novel study with the Beloved by Toni Morrison PRE-READING ACTIVITY Who Is Margaret Garner Article resource to learn about the woman who inspired Toni Morrison to write Beloved. This activity will also encourage students to predict the themes they expect to see in this novel. The distance learning MAGICAL REALISM MINI-LESSON for ELA, Introduction in Genre is also a great introductory resource, as Beloved falls under the umbrella of the magical realism genre.

I begin the Beloved BELL RINGER READING QUIZZES digital printable assessments after reading the first chapter of Beloved, and follow with assigning the TIME MAP Timeline Activity Digital Printable after reading chapters 2 and 3. The Time Map is a great consolidating activity for each reading assignment, and an engaging alternative to typical comprehension question handouts. The BELOVED Rhetorical Analysis FREE RESPONSE ESSAY WRITING PROMPTS pertain to the monologues presented in chapter 20-22, and the BELOVED Novel Study FREE RESPONSE ESSAY PROMPTS and DISCUSSION QUESTIONS can be assigned at any time during this novel study. The Discussing Racial Inequality SELF-ASSESSMENT CHECKLISTS and CONTRACT TEMPLATE is a useful starting point in preparing your classroom and your students for a meaningful discussion about the sensitive themes presented within this novel.
