Description

NEW November 2018!! Video file has now been added into this lesson so you can easily download, and an unlisted link to the video on Youtube is included as well. Use this video for clarification of steps OR do as I do and let the video do the teaching!! Plus with the video, I can replay steps as needed for the little ones who understandably need to see an instruction more than once! This is a knee-slapping funny, refrigerator or frame-worthy adorable project which has proven to entertain the teacher thoroughly (I look forward to this every year!) and delight parents! I do this with my Kindergarten artists but this could be successfully completed with students in surrounding age groups (1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade or 4th grade. I even put the materials out for 5th grade when we have extra time and let them "free style" penguin collage art/cards without instructions). This lesson is broken down into easy to follow instructions (with pictures) along with language and examples which are easily understood by Kindergarten students. Enjoy this project from the elementary art classroom of Claire Dunaway Cyr before and after the holidays! The materials used in this project are on hand in most classrooms- Construction Paper, Pencils, Scissors, Glue, Q-tips, White Liquid Paint (craft paint, acyrlic, liquid tempera, etc)... the only material that is a little different is the Construction Paper Crayons that we use to add patterns to the construction paper that becomes the hat/scarf, but you can easily substitute white paper and regular crayons or markers as needed.

***I received the only critical review of this project for not providing templates/ready-to-cut pages. I do not provide templates in this lesson as I do not use them myself. I do not believe in using them in my classroom with projects such as this one because the students are able to draw their own lines and shapes with easy-to-follow instructions and healthy expectations (I obviously provide assistance to the appropriate degree and on the rare occasion that a student that truly needs the shapes drawn for him or her then I am happy to quickly do that by hand; still quicker than copying templates anyway!). This process results in delightfully unique penguin projects as well as boosts confidence in the students. The kids are always amazed at the results of their own work! I do this project with my Kindergarten artists in November/December; it is great reinforcement for drawing, cutting, gluing and following directions as well as a great review of lines, shape and size by this time in the year. Enjoy! :)
