What educators are saying

My students really wanted to watch this movie but we can’t watch movies unless the are used as a learning tool. This resource allowed me to present it to the principal with the appropriate standards identified. He gave his approval for my class!
I used this with my Creative Writing classes. I loved the prompts having students imagine the characters after the movie has ended.

PART 1 – Comprehension questions

There are 20 questions altogether. I have made two sets for differentiation. One set is multiple-choice and the other is long answer. They are both in chronological order and include answers.

The multiple choice questions have also worked well with my ESL students.

PART 2 – Creative writing

• Students to design a candy making machine and a new candy. They are to draw and label the machine, as well as the new candy.

• Students to write a short account of what each child did after leaving the factory.

• Students to imagine they are Charlie and they’re entering the factory for the first time as the owner. They then write a recount of their day, explaining all the things they did and places visited.

PART 3 – 20 clue crossword with answers

Based on the book by Roald Dahl, this movie is about Willy Wonka who announces that 5 golden tickets are to be found in his chocolate bars. For young Charlie, getting hold of one of those tickets would be a dream come true. When he finds some money on the street and buys a chocolate bar, he strikes gold at last. The 5 children are admitted to the factory and find a wonderland of candies and chocolate.

How can movies help students learn English?

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral

part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real

situations. This includes accents different to your own.

Movies gives a visual context

- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context.

To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

Variety and flexibility

- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,

debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarising.
