Description

Wildlife Trafficking covers the following:

  • European roots of wildlife law in the U.S.
  • Poaching in early America
  • Lacey Act of 1900
  • CITES
  • Global demand, virtual market, link to other crimes, technology
  • Environmental impact
  • Presidential Task Force on Wildlife Trafficking
  • Careers in conservation and environmental law

What's included:

  • 31 slides (includes links to articles, videos, PDFs, CITES online course)
  • 10-page packet (guided notes, questions for each linked resource, article review)

*This unit is ideal for self-directed study, even if you have someone subbing for you. It will take 3-5 days to complete, depending on class length and student ability. In addition to the slides, notes, and readings, there are instructions on how to take the 5-lesson Introductory Course to CITES (see photo), which is a free online course that culminates in a test and certificate of completion. The course and test take approximately 1.5 hours to complete.

*Prep: (1) Print and assemble packets; (2) Make slides and PDFs available to students digitally. Make sure the PDFs linked in your slides are accessible to students before assigning. To be extra sure, I also include the PDFs in Schoology to avoid any PDF link issues.
