Description

Sample the first episode of my package of journal questions for the free CBC podcast series "Who Killed Alberta Williams", a podcast on Canada's MMIWG crisis. In my full paid unit I have journal questions for all 8 episodes with answer key available.

I have used this podcast successfully in my New Media 10-12 and English First Peoples classrooms for several years, and find it is an excellent way to humanize victims of the MMIWG crisis instead of reading about numbers and statistics. This podcast is researched and hosted by CBC's Connie Walker, who is a Cree journalist.

English First Peoples "Big Ideas" this unit cover:
- Self-representation through authentic First Peoples text is a means to foster justice
-First Peoples texts and stories provide insight into key aspects of Canada’s past, present, and future.

BC Curricular competencies this unit covers:
-Recognize and identify personal, social, and cultural contexts, values, and perspectives in texts, including gender, sexual orientation, and socio-economic factors
-Demonstrate speaking and listening skills in a variety of formal and informal contexts for a range of purposes
-Express and support an opinion with evidence

-Respond to text in personal, creative, and critical ways

Why this podcast? According to the Calls for Justice from The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, educators are asked to heed this call:

Calls for Educators:

11.1 We call upon all elementary, secondary, and post-secondary institutions and education authorities to educate and provide awareness to the public about missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people, and about the issues and root causes of violence they experience. All curriculum development and programming should be done in partnership with Indigenous Peoples, especially Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people. Such education and awareness must include historical and current truths about the genocide against Indigenous Peoples through state laws, policies, and colonial practices.

This podcast is done by Connie Walker, who is a woman and member of the Indigenous community, and provides much context and information on Canada's MMIWG crisis for your students.
