"Where I'm From" Poem Packet

This very short poetry unit can be used as a great introductory tool at the beginning of the year to assess student writing as well as a "get to know you" activity. The document includes a detailed unit plan (including Common Core standard alignments), a short calendar on how you could pace it in your own classes, all handouts and copies (including the poem, sample poems, planning pages, and a template that can be used as a modification for SPED students).

In addition to the students writing their poems, there is an emphasis on them sharing the final products with the class after they've published them. This encourages students to become comfortable with sharing as well as encouraging positive feedback from peers after the students read them aloud. It is a good opportunity to teach respectful feedback/sharing skills.

This lesson is aligned with the 8th grade Common Core standards, although it could easily be used at any secondary grade level (I've previously taught it with 10th graders).
