What educators are saying

This is a great starter activity to both assess writing and get to know a bit about your students! It's perfect for the beginning of the year in middle school, or the start of the semester for secondary students.

Description

This resource contains a First Day of School Writing Diagnostic Assessment (activity and checklist for future writing tasks) for junior, intermediate, or senior students. It can be used for a variety of subject areas in order to get to know your students and to assess their level of writing for your course. A checklist is provided in order to give constructive feedback for the future.

This can be done at the beginning of the school year and/or semester to assess students' strengths and next steps in their writing.

I usually tell students a story about my name and also about my cultural upbringing and background as a prompt before they start writing. I talk about the importance of names, heritage, and culture and keeping these traditions alive by pronouncing names correctly. I encourage my students to do this in class and then I collect their writing at the end of the period.
