What educators are saying
Description
This product and other - What’s in a Song? – lessons are a great way to combine history and the arts. I use these in my U.S. History class as well in my advisory period as a way to create discussion and provoke thoughts about the environment, social justice, and activism. My students are able to connect the themes of the song with current events of today.
I begin each of these by playing the song for my students and ask what they think the message is in the lyrics. We then read through the historical background of the song. After, we look at the lyrics while the song is played once again. Song analysis questions are answered, and class discussion – sometimes lively - ensues.
These can certainly be used as you teach about protests throughout your history curriculum and want to attach student inquiry and parallels of today.
