Description

This activity incorporates the song, "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" by Greg and Steve (2000). The students rewrite the lyrics by changing the animal, the 5 places the kids visit during the song, the prepositions, and they add action verbs at the end of the song as they run back home. This activity also helps students learn about animals and their habitats because the 5th place the kids visit must be the correct habitat. Have the class repeat each phrase back to the performer (either you or the kids), just like in the song above! Then they draw a picture of their animal in the correct habitat using the provided template (not in the preview, but it is in the thumbnails). This activity is a fun and silly way to simultaneously learn about grammar, science, writing, performing, drawing, and more!

The packet provides the following resources:

  1. Lyric sheet for the Greg and Steve version of "Going on a Bear Hunt"
  2. A 2-page mad lib for the students to write their own version of the song (consider putting students in pairs or small groups)
  3. A poster of 26 animal suggestions (one for each letter of the alphabet)
  4. A poster of 11 habitat suggestions
  5. A poster of 36 preposition suggestions that fit with the song
  6. A poster of 44 place suggestions
  7. A poster of 36 action verb suggestions
  8. Template for drawing and recording the name of the animal and habitat. These drawings would be great to display outside or around your classroom.
