Description

Students will use their critical thinking skills to design and execute a weather forecast for a specific time and geographical area. For a few minutes of prep from the teacher, students will share everything they know about precipitation, weather patterns, and weather measurements to create a forecast.

This resource is part of our Weather Unit Bundle, but we have a better recommendation for Alberta teachers below.

This project-based learning resource includes:

  • a complete lesson plan with options to modify for your students.
  • common forecasting symbols and weather maps.
  • ways to predict the weather.
  • why weather prediction is important.
  • an open-ended project to design a weather forecast.
  • tips and tricks for project-based learning in your classroom.
  • options for live or video projects.
  • student task pages.
  • student planning pages.
  • rubric and student checklists.
  • group and self-assessment reflections.
  • photographs of student examples.
  • a digital version of all the student pages that use Google Slides. You must download the PDF file and use the access link in the file to get your digital copy. To be clear, this is a hands-on activity. Only the instructions and information pages can be used digitally.
  • an alignment guide for Alberta Outcomes.

This resource has been classroom tested with several groups of different fifth-grade students and it is always a hit.

These lessons align with:

  • Alberta Science Curriculum © 2022 Grade 5 (new outcomes)

These lessons support:

  • any unit about weather.
