Description

NOTE: If you prefer a Google Slides-format for this presentation, and you don't want to have to fix formatting issues, I have that posted separately in my store HERE. All other resources in this product line are also available in Google Slides or Google Docs formats in my store.

Thanks for checking out this product! This download includes an editable PowerPoint presentation to instruct students on a simple "formula" to write introductions and conclusions. The PowerPoint is divided into 2 distinct parts: part 1 covers introductions and part 2 addresses conclusions.

The presentation is designed to be used as a UNIT OF STUDY, not a quick drive-by, one-day, "spray-n-pray" lesson. I generally work with my students for 7-10 days on this concept, because I always take my writing lessons slow and provide plenty of time for mastery (it's important to note that my students typically work 1-2 grade levels below their actual level--5th). For typical classes, I spend 5-6 days writing introductions, and then once they've mastered those (with plenty of practice outside of the PowerPoint), I jump back into the PowerPoint to cover conclusions. Once kids can write the introduction, the conclusion part goes pretty quickly (3-4 days).

Each section of presentation includes plenty of explicit examples with embedded practice (and answers).

This download also includes an editable student fill-in reference sheet (with answers). I have found that by having students take notes by filling in the reference sheet, they remain better engaged in the presentation. Then, after completing the reference sheet, my students file it in their ELA binders to use to refer to during completion of my 5 WORKSHEETS to practice this skill during the week (you can find those HERE). Additionally, the reference sheet serves as a study guide to use in preparation of my ASSESSMENT (you can find that HERE). I also have a set of 2 color-coordinated PDF ANCHOR CHARTS that I print and laminate poster size and copy for students to file in the "references" section of their binders (you can find those HERE). If you want to grab the entire product line in a BUNDLE which includes the PPT, notes page, 5 worksheets, an assessment, and the 2 anchor charts, you can grab it HERE.

For added practice, you can find a list of 123 all-purpose WRITING PROMPTS for all text types HERE. I use those as bell-ringers to practice introductions or conclusions. I simply copy a prompt and present it on my Promethean Board and give students 5 minutes to write an introduction for it. You can save those introductions to later have students complete body paragraphs and conclusions (recycled writing!).
