Stretch the Word:
Students use word cards that demonstrate how to stretch the word accurately. Then, they record the sounds they see on the word card on their own recording sheet. This is a perfect center for introducing a vowel pattern or for independent review.
Write the Word:
Students must use their letter-sound knowledge to match picture cards with the written word. After matching their picture and word cards, they record their answers on the recording sheet. This is perfect for students who are working toward independently decoding words.
Sort It:
At this center, students who are ready to independently decode long vowel sounds work to decode and sort words into the correct categories on their recording sheet. Select as few or as many vowel sounds for your students to practice.
Write the Room:
This is a very engaging center and a favorite of many of my students. Students search for hidden words throughout the room and record them on their recording sheet. This activity includes three recording sheets for use in differentiating or utilizing at different points of the school year. Recording Sheet 1 Students write the word from the room, then circle the letter or letters that make the targeted sound. Recording Sheet 2 Students will use the second recording sheet to sort the words that they find based on the targeted sound. Recording Sheet 3 Students use the recording sheet to record the discovered word and give a rhyming word to accompany it. This provides valuable word analysis practice.
