CONTENTS:
This vocabulary in writing resource contains six different types of activities:
- 5 RAFT writing assignments that encourage students to use their words in writing as they take on different points of view and write for different audiences. You can edit the file in PPT to add your own words. Or, you can use the five words included, which are voracious, plausible, surreptitious, ubiquitous, and impervious. Each of the 5 activities, which can be edited, comes with a graphic organizer to help scaffold student responses. Suggested, entertaining answers are also included, but they use different vocabulary words, roles, and audiences so that students don't get writer's block after seeing an example...and so that they don't just duplicate the samples. You will also find a rubric with editable wording and an additional writing options list.
- A Vocabulary Triangle Connections activity, which is more informative and brief. Students select three words from their current or previous lists and make connections between those words on the graphic organizer. Then, they write about what the words have in common.
- A 6 Room Poem exercise, which encourages students to think about the vocabulary word from different sensory angles as well as its connotative and denotative meanings. Scaffolding suggestions are included for struggling writers in the teacher's note. Example included!
- The Tweet a Word activity brings relevance and brevity to vocabulary writing practice. Students will practice writing tweets from two angles. They will write about the vocabulary words, and they will write from the persona of the vocabulary words. These tweet messages are fun to cut out and display around the room.
- A Vocabulary Diamante gives students the opportunity to write about their word from the angle of synonyms or antonyms. Plus, it includes an idea for an extend-your-thinking enrichment step if some of your students could benefit from a challenge.
- A School Schedule activity, wherein students write about their vocabulary words as they relate to their classes.
- A rubric that is editable in PPT so you can adapt it to meet your expectations...this rubric is flexible and brief enough to be used with any of the vocabulary in writing activities.
The student answer pages and graphic organizers are also included in Google Drive format.
The vocabulary writing activities included in this resource are intended to be creative but also informative because of the variety of writing genres. Students will have the opportunity to compose emails, post cards, letters, tweets, text messages, and more...all while using their vocabulary words in real-world contexts.
All of these activities can either be used with one or multiple vocabulary words.
Use these creative and informative vocabulary writing activities throughout the school year with any word list. Sprinkle them in with stations, literacy centers, substitute days, vocabulary reviews, homework assignments, bell ringers, and more. While these activities can work for many different subject areas, they are intended for words that one would find in common reading and writing. They would not be as effective with academic vocabulary, like proper nouns or medical jargon.
