What educators are saying

I used this resource as a visualizing intervention for one of my students. Through the use of this resource, my student was successfully able begin visualizing while reading. I love that I was able to have the student track their progress as well!
It's not easy to find visualizing activities that are engaging for the students. This one did the trick! My students loved this activity.

Description

Have you ever had a student read and not comprehend? Uh, yes, I think we all have! This reading behavior is all too common in students who *can* read, or sound like a reader, but too often these "readers", are not comprehending anything at all, these students are often known as "word callers." This is problematic, but can be fixed with this resource.

I have been teaching Visualizing to students for over 10 years because it is one of the most important reading strategies to help students stay tuned in while they read. Visualizing is an *in the head* reading strategy where students create pictures in their mind of actions, events and details in the story. Visualizing is a reading strategy in the Predicting and Inferring family because with all three of these reading strategies, readers are required to fill in the missing pieces of the story in their mind. They are all important to becoming strategic, proficient, independent, comprehending readers. These reading strategies are also critical for close reading. Students must attend to all the details in close reading, in order to discriminate important details from unimportant details.

This product is not grade specific, it is reader specific. This resource is intended for use with any non-comprehending reader. Most likely, it will be used with 2nd-9th grade readers who can read the words but who cannot comprehend anything they've read. It could also be used for Kindergarten or 1st grade students who are reading. Again, the ones who can read but who can't remember or recall many details from the text.

This product says Assessments on the cover, but they could be used any way you see fit for instruction or remediation, or at home. They could also be used to progress monitor a Visualizing intervention.

Please see and download the Preview for more details and one sample assessment and answer key. 20 assessments total, 2 differentiated versions of each story, plus 20 answer keys and documentation graphs.
