Valentines From Around the World

All students love to receive mail, even more if they receive it at school. Just enter your school information using Acrobat and send the fillable letter home to parents asking them to have friends and family send Valentines cards to your school attention to their child Once they start coming in, find the state on the map, color it in then find the state on the graph to graph it. Each student gets their own copy of the graph and the map to keep at their desks. When you're done coloring the rectangles on the graph for the day, discuss more and less than and write number sentences and then turn them into inverse equations. Then, hang up your master map, graph and the cards on a bulletin board. On Valentines Day, send all the cards home with the child they were sent to. (Note: I usually ask some friends to do some as well and send those home with students who may not get any.) I provided blank lines on the back of page 2 on the graph and a blank sheet of graphing paper so you can add other countries, regions, etc. Use the compass to have students identify what states are north, south, east, and west of other states. I use this to help students find the next state we need to color in.
We've received some in other languages and from state leaders. Each year we receive more and more.
