Description

This Valentine's Day themed pack contains an original song, a folk song, and vocal exploration exercises for the elementary music classroom. Printable resources include a coloring page Valentine, blank cutout candy hearts, and a Venn diagram. Projectable resources include vocal exploration pathways, song lyrics, and music notation. A recording is included of the original song "Valentine's Candy." Suggested recordings (available online) for the American folk song "Love Somebody" are provided.

Full instructions include lesson plans for both songs, extension activities, and directions for the vocal exploration pathway activities. Use it yourself for some fun Valentine's Day themed activities, or print it off and leave it as a sub file or sub plans for a substitute teacher.

Elementary students of all ages will find success with the colorful and creative vocal exploration pathways. Students can drag a candy heart along a crayon path, use the eraser to reveal a hidden message, or draw their own vocal pathway, all while vocalizing and engaging the head voice (lighter register). The candy hearts have words on them for vocalization such as "ooh" and "whee" to help expand the vocal range and practice sustaining open vowels.

The original song "Valentine's Candy" is a fun ditty that can be sung a cappella or played via the included recording. Students will love making up messages for their own paper candy hearts (printable included). This activity encourages confidence and independence as students speak or sing the message they made up for their candy hearts. Extension activities include coloring the candy hearts. Extractable rhythms include ti ti ta ta ta and quarter rest. Extractable melody fragments include so so mi so mi and fa fa re fa re. This song is a good example of the musical concept "sequence." Teachers will find many opportunities to use this song to teach musical concepts.

The final group of slides in this file feature the American folk song "Love Somebody." Suggested activities include learning the song, coloring a valentine for someone they love, and completing a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting two recordings of the song. Everything you need is included, even web addresses to preview and download suggested recordings of the song.

After you download and have a chance to view the file, please return to rate and review this product. I'd love to hear from you so I can continue to improve my offerings! Thanks!
