Description
At the end of the last school year, I found myself wishing I had a simple overview of the parts of speech to help my students review basics for the final exam. I know that terms + definitions and examples aren't enough for in-depth application, so this bundle is meant to be an introduction and/or review of parts of speech in a visual and linear (in the case of Cornell Notes) way.
The GRAPHIC ORGANIZER suggests how terms are used, with prepositions between nouns and verbs since there are both prepositional phrases that always include nouns (to the box, from the store) as well as phrasal verbs that use prepositions (ex. stand up, stand on, etc.).
Adjectives and pronouns are linked via arrows to the Noun box for similar reasons.
Adverbs are linked to the Verbs box, again, to demonstrate their connection.
Finally, I have included Articles here because they are often left out by second-language learners of English. It's good to teach your students the vocabulary if their native language doesn't have articles in the same way, or uses them differently (as my Chinese- and Spanish-speaking students have).
This product serves as a complement to the more advanced and detailed Cornell Notes Parts of Speech product that is bundled with this pack!
There is an image-friendly version for younger students and ELLs, and also contains a simplified one that will work for older learners as well as black and white printers. It contains a ninth part of speech--ARTICLES--to help ESL students who may struggle to remember when to include them.
The graphic organizer part of this bundle includes:
- Two graphic organizers: one with images and/or examples of the parts of speech, and one without
- A4 and Letter-size DOCX and printable PDFs
For the second part of this bundle, I've taken the sleeker Cornell Notes template that I sell unfilled and added in Parts of Speech--in two levels! The first is a basic overview: it just lists the eight main parts of speech. I leave three lines per term; it's up to you to decide what to put. I suggest you define each part of speech, list the subtypes (if desired), and give examples.
The higher level form adds types of nouns, verbs, pronouns and conjunctions, but feel free to edit what I have added! I am including the editable DOCX and I did NOT flatten these PDFs because I know it can depend on what your students need. I teach honors high school English, but to Chinese learners of English, so I include EFL things like countable and non-countable nouns that wouldn't be as useful for native speakers. You can choose and add in or take out what you like!
The Cornell Notes part of this bundle includes:
- Two levels of parts of speech notes: basic and those with sub-types for more advanced students
- A4 and Letter-size DOCX and printable PDFs
- A4 and Letter-size Fillable PDFs: if you use both the DOCX and fillable PDF, be sure to give students the same page size because the order of terms changed slightly between the sizes.
