Description

I created this cheat sheet to help my 7th graders with IEPs who are included in the general education classroom. Students tend to struggle with decoding questions such as "45 is what percent of 50?" and "75% of what number is 30?" Cheat sheets like this help support more independence when students practice what they've learned. It can also be helpful to parents assisting their children with homework at home.

The resource includes three pages. I recommend printing the first two pages as one two-sided cheat sheet and displaying the third page as a reminder. You can also post all three pages on a password-protected site such as a Google Classroom page.

The first page includes:

  • A review of the meaning of percents (with pictures)
  • A review showing how to turn a percent into a decimal
  • An introduction to the percent equation, including an example
  • Step-by-step instructions for using the percent equation to find a missing part

The second page includes:

  • Step-by-step instructions for using the percent equation to find a missing total
  • Step-by-step instructions for using the percent equation to find a missing percent

The third page includes:

  • A summary of what is covered on the first two pages
  • Two examples for each type of problem (missing part, missing total, and missing percent), focusing on translating the question into an equation
