Description

This 8 slide Math Activ Studio flipchart teaches students how to use a tally chart to make a bar graph. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 4.5 - 1st grade, although it can be used to teach concepts in grades K-4. This lesson begins with the “Problem of the Day” in which students are given information and they must visualize what the bar graph that goes with that information would look like - the teacher will then move the black square to reveal the bar graph. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary term(s) needed to understand the content of the lesson: pictograph, tally chart, and bar graph. Next, the students are shown a completed tally chart and an empty bar graph - they must manipulate the colored bars on the bar graph to match the information on the tally chart (flavors of icecream). Next, they must do the opposite: create tally chart to match the bar graph. Next, the students will build their own bar graph based on animals in the desert and are asked questions (questions and notes included). The teacher will then ask students questions about the bar graph (notes included in flipchart). The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The next page gives a review and closure question to check for students’ understanding of the lesson taught in which they are asked a “what if” scenario on a bar graph, then are asked about what certain parts of a bar graph mean. The last page gives a math journal entry in which students are given information and are asked to create a corresponding bar graph with that information (friends’ favorite colors).
