What educators are saying

My students really enjoyed the topics overall -- something different! I did adapt the materials a little to fit our class schedule / timing (2 hour delays, etc.). The only issue I had was that some of the links for the TRAAP activity were blocked for students.
We had a lot of fun with this one. I felt they learned while having fun with the topic of "fake news" and resource credibility.

Description

This resource will teach your students how to identify contemporary folktales and urban legends! Teach your students how to evaluate online sources - including viral photos, hoaxes, and fake news!

This teaching resource includes relevant, high-interest materials that will teach your secondary students how to evaluate websites and how to determine the credibility of online articles, urban legends, and viral photos.

Your students will be engaged while learning about classic and modern urban legends. Students will analyze the reasons why our society creates these stories. This resource also teaches students about the warning signs to look for when assessing the credibility of online content.

Students will answer questions based on an Urban Legends Google Slides presentation that includes video clips, links to online news stories, and interactive online exercises testing their knowledge in selecting which online news articles are fake vs. real. They will also engage in application activities by applying what they learn in order to determine which viral photos are real and which ones have been altered or photoshopped.

Students will learn the TRAAP checklist for evaluating websites: T- Timeliness, R-Relevance, A-Authority, A-Accuracy, P-Purpose.

Using the TRAAP checklist and a TRAAP website evaluation chart, students will assess a pair of online articles on 4 different topics in order to evaluate whether the information is credible or fake news.

Armed with the knowledge of fact-checking sites, warning signs to look for, and a web evaluation checklist, your students will never fall for the “TRAAP” of fake news again!
